Urban Birding. Déjà vu.

2016-09-29 | Askar Isabekov

Today I was going to visit Republic Square and thought about juvenile Red-backed Shrike was photographed on the bush near fir-tree almost one month ago. Since I made first photos of this bird I visited Square some times and all the time the Shrike perched on the same bush. Last time I was here three day ago with Sasha Katuntsev and Shrike was on its post. But in my opinion Shrike must leave the Square before the rains, I thought it could not stay in one spot so long. But I was wrong; Shrike was on its post. I took some photos and go. When I approached to the spot where we photographed Nightjar I see the same bird on same place. Déjà vu. I took photos of Nightjar and was tried to remember what other birds I saw that day. I saw Quail. When I was watching Nightjar the Rat expels the Quail from the green fence. Quail didn’t fly away but hid under the next tree. I hoped the Quail stay under tree some time, but bird was scared and fly away in time when saw me. Hard to hope to shoot the Quail [...... read more ]

Big Almaty Lake

2016-09-14 | Askar Isabekov

Non birding trip to Big Almaty Lake. I watched birds only a little time. After yesterday rain I waited the snow in mountains but it was absent. Very warm autumn this year in mountains. Birds were a bit. Black-throated Accentors and Stonechats run in the juniper thickets. Hobbies learned juveniles to hunt. The most important record was the Ibisbill flew above the lake from one side to another. [...... read more ]

Urban Birding. Almaty.

2016-09-12 | Askar Isabekov

Two days I watched birds in Republic Square together with Sanzhar Abdikhalyk. Now is migration time, the perfect time to watch birds. All the birds are expected and common, but perhaps it is good as the meeting with old friends. The Nightjar Day (20th Spetember) is not far and I carefully explored the branches of larch-trees in high-part of Square, but Nightjar waited me on the ground near juniper bush. Nightjar twice close moved from one point to another but in third time I lost it. I understood that scared Nightjar could fly far but unlikely not out of Square area. So I began to carefully observe all of trees and meadows. After about half of hour I came back to start point and noticed Nightjar flying into the space between bushes. I began to explore the birch-tree grove again and noted Nightjar on the branch of birch-tree. Nice, because when I see Nightjar before it see me I can approach close to the distance of good photo. But if Nightjar sees you first, more likely you have no photo [...... read more ]

© Askar Isabekov
2021-02-28
Uzunagach, Almaty oblast.

A rare vagrant species for Kazakhstan. On February 27 and 28, two birds kept in the thickets of silverberries near the village of Uzynagash (43 km west of Almaty). This is the sixth record of the Dusky Thrush for Kazakhstan. Records of this species are known for the Syrdarya, near the village of Dzhulek (October 16, 1927), near Almaty (February 16, 2013), as well as Ust-Kamenogorsk (October 14 and 16, 2016), Kurgaldzhino (May 7, 2020).

Pygmy Cormorant (Phalacrocorax pygmaeus)

© Askar Isabekov
2021-01-09
Almaty, Aitykov str.

The first record of Pygmy Cormorant in Almaty in general and, in particular, during the winter. The expansion of the Pygmy Cormorant to the northeast concerns not only the probable nesting area, but also the wintering grounds. The nearest winter finds are Sorbulak and Taldykorgan (winter 2017-18, one bird each). In this connection, it is worth noting a significant number of birds in the Almaty (40) and Sorbulak (20) records this winter.

Pied Avocet (Recurvirostra avosetta)

Twice the wintering of Pied Avocet were recorded on Shardara (7 birds on January 14, 2018 and 35 birds on January 11, 2020, B. M. Gubin, S. Baskakova, A. Isabekov).
