Almaty.

The Blackbirds continue to sing, probably the spring begins. Also Great Tits begin to sing. Both birds sing the songs still in morning twilight. [...... read more ]

Ozerny gorge. Ile Alatau National Park.

2009-01-16 | Askar Isabekov

Very sunny and very warm day but the birds are a bit. Two Great Tits, three Chaffinches, two Brown Dippers, one Azure Tit, one European Robin, two Pheasants (one cock and one hen), four Blackbirds. That's all! All the birds including Chaffinches were observed singly. [...... read more ]

Trip to Bartogai.

2009-01-08 | Askar Isabekov

The day is sunny and warm. The trip roughly divided in two parts, the first one is the road among the foothills of Karash ridge and the second one is Sogety valley with Bartogai reservoir. The foothills without wind were hazy. As the last trip to Bartogai the birds were noted almost only in the djida (russian olive) thickets. Today we saw Fieldfares, Greenfinches, Black-throated Thrushes, Corn Buntings, one Yellowhammer, one Eversmann's Redstart, Pine Buntings, Mistle Thrushes were eating djida berries. The most numerous and most appreciable bird was Mistle Thrush (except the Magpie of course). Along the road the flocks of Mistle Thrushes were observed at every step; considering its size and number it's impossible not to note they. Mistle Thrushes are not so shy birds but never long postured. So today we don't have a lot of photos of Mistle Thrushes. Also today we saw birds were feeding on the birch-trees. Several Azure Tits, Long-tailed Rosefinches, Red-fronted Serins. The large flock [...... read more ]

The short trip to the buckthorn thickets. The results are many Carrion Crows and Magpies, two Great Tits, one Eversmann's Redstart, one Guldenstadt's Redstart, one White-bellied Dipper, one Goldcrest, three Red-mantled Rosefinches (one adult male). And the main is Solitary Snipe. The Snipe were feeding easy on the watercourse and let me possibility to make photos and even video. [...... read more ]

Big Almaty Lake. Ile-Alatau National Park.

2009-01-02 | Askar Isabekov

Day is sunny, quite warm and very windy. On the road I beheld one Red-mantled Rosefinch and one Guldenstadt's Redstart. The lake is already whole frozen but the empty and outflow rivers are almost without ice. The birds were a little probably through the strong wind. At first I beheld only Carrion Crows (which number was a strange little), single Magpies, and the nimble flock of the Red-fronted Serins flew here and there and opposing the wind yet pecked up the seeds from the grass. Later on the ice-hole I saw one White-bellied Dipper and one Wallcreeper. Further on the gorge from time to time the Brown Accentors streaked in the spruce forest. On the ice-hole of mouth of Ozernaya river the Mallard Ducks winter as on last year. Today I have accounted 14 Mallards. The Ducks fed not in river's mouth but some upwards. There is no place to fly out in mountains therefore the casual flashed Mallards having roamed over lake again come back to the ice-hole. Having walked a little upwards the river [...... read more ]

Dusky Thrush (Turdus eunomus)

© Askar Isabekov
2021-02-28
Uzunagach, Almaty oblast.

A rare vagrant species for Kazakhstan. On February 27 and 28, two birds kept in the thickets of silverberries near the village of Uzynagash (43 km west of Almaty). This is the sixth record of the Dusky Thrush for Kazakhstan. Records of this species are known for the Syrdarya, near the village of Dzhulek (October 16, 1927), near Almaty (February 16, 2013), as well as Ust-Kamenogorsk (October 14 and 16, 2016), Kurgaldzhino (May 7, 2020).

Pygmy Cormorant (Phalacrocorax pygmaeus)

Almaty, Aitykov str.

The first record of Pygmy Cormorant in Almaty in general and, in particular, during the winter. The expansion of the Pygmy Cormorant to the northeast concerns not only the probable nesting area, but also the wintering grounds. The nearest winter finds are Sorbulak and Taldykorgan (winter 2017-18, one bird each). In this connection, it is worth noting a significant number of birds in the Almaty (40) and Sorbulak (20) records this winter.

Sorbulak lake system. Almaty oblast.

First winter record for Sorbulak (-10 ° С). Before that, the latest sighting at Sorbulak was on November 24, 2006 (3 birds, Belyalov, Karpov, 2013). Twice the wintering of Pied Avocet were recorded on Shardara (7 birds on January 14, 2018 and 35 birds on January 11, 2020, B. M. Gubin, S. Baskakova, A. Isabekov).
