Trip to Trans-Balkhash area.

2011-09-27 | Askar Isabekov

On the reservoir over Bayserke there are no birds except Great Crested Grebes and Black-headed Gulls. But a lot of Grebes, I think that it's possible to see not less than 50-60 birds simultaneously. In the roadside elm I heard but not saw the Azure Tit.On the way before Kapchagai reservoir and immediately over Kapchagai the Rooks were soaring in the sky, apparently were forming the flocks and were preparing to fly away. Near Kerbulak wintering first time this year I saw Hooded Crows. Also the Chaffinches have already arrived, I saw the single male and several flocks flying over the steppe. On roadside bushes I saw Black Redstart, Hume's Warblers, Isabelline Shrikes, several Kestrels and two Hobbies. Twice I saw the flying Harriers, presumably the Hen Harrier. Black-throated Thrush was sitting on the dry twig, but saw me and flew to the nearby tree and hid in the large Magpie's nest. In the large clay coomb I saw Little Owl (unfortunately wasn't shoot), Hume's Warblers, Chiffchaffs, female [...... read more ]

Ile Alatau National Park. Little Almaty river.

2011-09-23 | Askar Isabekov

At early evening I passed to the mountains just to sit on the river side. Saw Grey Wagtails. Some Wagtails jumped straight up and caught the insects in flight. On one of the jumps the Sparrowhawk tried to catch the Wagtail. But the Wagtail was quicker than Sparrowhawk, the raptor was left without prey and perched on nearby tree. [...... read more ]

Uzunagach, Almaty oblast.

A rare vagrant species for Kazakhstan. On February 27 and 28, two birds kept in the thickets of silverberries near the village of Uzynagash (43 km west of Almaty). This is the sixth record of the Dusky Thrush for Kazakhstan. Records of this species are known for the Syrdarya, near the village of Dzhulek (October 16, 1927), near Almaty (February 16, 2013), as well as Ust-Kamenogorsk (October 14 and 16, 2016), Kurgaldzhino (May 7, 2020).

Pygmy Cormorant (Phalacrocorax pygmaeus)

Almaty, Aitykov str.

The first record of Pygmy Cormorant in Almaty in general and, in particular, during the winter. The expansion of the Pygmy Cormorant to the northeast concerns not only the probable nesting area, but also the wintering grounds. The nearest winter finds are Sorbulak and Taldykorgan (winter 2017-18, one bird each). In this connection, it is worth noting a significant number of birds in the Almaty (40) and Sorbulak (20) records this winter.

Twice the wintering of Pied Avocet were recorded on Shardara (7 birds on January 14, 2018 and 35 birds on January 11, 2020, B. M. Gubin, S. Baskakova, A. Isabekov).
