My first Purple-rumped Sunbirds

2017-10-25| Askar Isabekov

I was going to reach the known to me spot near airport by another road, also I was going to start my birding some earlier than in previously day. At 7am many people were going to the job, some of kids were going to school. There were mist in the open areas. In the mist I took the photo of Little Cormorant perching in banana tree. Banana is very nice background to the birds; any bird looks very nice on the banana leaf. Also in the morning road I found my first lifer, the Purple-rumped Sunbird. Three or four birds flew off from the tree crown and began to feed in tall grass. Firstly I tried to take photo of female bird, then male which was more calm model, and more beauty of course. I later photographed these Sunbirds in banana plantation too. Also during the road I twice flushed Parakeets but can't to take photo.

In the little village located among the banana and coconut plantations there was the quite active birds movement. I didn't go deep to village because I didn't want to worry the inhabitants. I stayed in the village's border and watched quite much birds. Some of them were feeding in the tops of banana and coconut trees, such as Babblers, Mynas, Sunbirds and Tailorbirds. Babbler also were feeding in the ground. There is one tree with rare leaf and little orange berries. In this tree I saw Black-hooded Oriole, Barbet, House Crow, Flameback, and may be some other birds. I suggested birds feed the berries, but in photo Oriole was eating the caterpillar. Probably there were many insects in the tree which were ate by birds. In bushes I noticed Red-vented Bulbuls, but when I tried to wait them the Red-whiskered Bulbuls become on. So now I am not sure either sounds of both these species of Bulbuls are so similar or I heard only Red-whiskered one. By the way, song of Black-hooded Oriole is the same to song of Golden Oriole.

Today I heard many different sounds. White-throated Kingfisher's song is very loud and very beauty, sometimes like to song of Greenwich. Kingfishers often perched in the top of tall tree, and singing the song. This bird is introvert, doesn't pay attention to other birds. Bird living in thier own world.

Today I noticed the Jungle Babblers with coconut bast in the bill. It means not only House Crows are going to nest.

Close to 4pm I went to the riverside directly by the road from my living residence. In my wondering the river bank is open, so I have opportunity to watch birds which were a bit. Two white Terns, probably River Terns, were catching fish from the water, some House Crows were chasing Brahminy Kite, two Blue-tailed Bee-eaters were perching in wires. That's all.

Dusky Thrush (Turdus eunomus)

© Askar Isabekov
2021-02-28
Uzunagach, Almaty oblast.

A rare vagrant species for Kazakhstan. On February 27 and 28, two birds kept in the thickets of silverberries near the village of Uzynagash (43 km west of Almaty). This is the sixth record of the Dusky Thrush for Kazakhstan. Records of this species are known for the Syrdarya, near the village of Dzhulek (October 16, 1927), near Almaty (February 16, 2013), as well as Ust-Kamenogorsk (October 14 and 16, 2016), Kurgaldzhino (May 7, 2020).

Pygmy Cormorant (Phalacrocorax pygmaeus)

Almaty, Aitykov str.

The first record of Pygmy Cormorant in Almaty in general and, in particular, during the winter. The expansion of the Pygmy Cormorant to the northeast concerns not only the probable nesting area, but also the wintering grounds. The nearest winter finds are Sorbulak and Taldykorgan (winter 2017-18, one bird each). In this connection, it is worth noting a significant number of birds in the Almaty (40) and Sorbulak (20) records this winter.

Pied Avocet (Recurvirostra avosetta)

Sorbulak lake system. Almaty oblast.

First winter record for Sorbulak (-10 ° С). Before that, the latest sighting at Sorbulak was on November 24, 2006 (3 birds, Belyalov, Karpov, 2013). Twice the wintering of Pied Avocet were recorded on Shardara (7 birds on January 14, 2018 and 35 birds on January 11, 2020, B. M. Gubin, S. Baskakova, A. Isabekov).
