Trip with Andrey Kovalenko, Raufael Bairashev and Gennady Dyakin. Weather forecast was contrary, but in morning there was little rain only and we wait the sunny weather at dinner time. But at 8 am the snow started, and snowfall increased each time. First item of our trip was the nest of Black Stork on Kurty river. We found both nest and Stork but had not possibility to shot it on account of dense snowfall. On roadsides we saw quite much Black Kites which flew under the rain but hid in trees at snowfall time.
The back road from Kurty to Sorbulak was under bold cover of snow. Snow covered the steppe too. But air and ground were warm, so snow thawed very quickly. At dinner time first open areas appeared. Birds appeared too. In the steppe zone there were a lot of Larks (Calandra and Greater Short-toed), some times Northern Wheatears, Corn Buntings were observed, once we saw flock of Eurasian Goldfinches. On lakes there were a lot of birds, mostly Coots and Ducks (Mallards, Wigeons, Pintails, Red-crested and Common Pochards, Garganeys (?), Tufted Ducks). On some lakes there were many Crested Grebes and Great Cormorants, the Dalmatian Pelicans were watched on Sorbulak lake only. Once we saw two Smews. Grey herons and White Egrets were popular. Black-headed, Caspian Gulls, several Pallas's Gulls, some Black-headed Gulls have winter plumage.
On open watersides there were the shorebirds but in little number. We saw Black-winged Stilts, Pied Avocets, Common Redshanks, Little Ringed Plovers, Spotted Redshanks, Common Snipes. On shores and in steppe zone many Masked, Black-headed, Citrine and White Wagtails were watched. Also we saw some Tawny Pipits and Hoopoes. In cane thickets we saw Reed Buntings and heard Azure Tits. On russian olive trees we saw Isabelline Shrike, Black-throated Thrushes and Yellowhammers. Yellowhammers, Pine Buntings and Kestrels were watched in elm groves. Raptors in addition to kestrels were numerous Black Kites, Hen and Marsh Harriers, one Eastern Buzzard, Sparrowhawks and several White-tailed Sea-Eagles.
