Shorebirds of the Northern Hemisphere" (Helm Photographic Guides):
Отличия большеклювого и монгольского зуйков.
Greater Sand Plover is larger than Lesser, though very similar in all plumages, particularly juvenile and non-breeding. Differs in structure, having larger and squarer head, larger eye; longer, more slender bill (usually lacking the prominent bulge at tip of Lesser’s upper mandible), and longer, generally paler legs than Lesser Sand Plover. Tarsus: bill ratio is 1.55-1.65 for Greater, 1.85-2/00 for Lesser Sand Plover. When breeding rufous-orange breast of Greater does not extend so far down flanks as on Lesser.
Race columbinus moults (and breeds) about two months earlier than other races; juvenile paler above owning to wider pale fringes on upperparts. Male breeding has black on face less well developed than other races, white above bill more diffuse; broad rufous fringes on upperparts. Races crassirostris and leschenaultii are more similar to one another, with the black on face more sharply defined, and the breast band darker and narrower than columbinus. Race leschenaultii has the darkest and narrowest breast-band, and largest white areas above bill.
When breeding the two groups can be reliably separated on plumage, but not individual races which differs mainly in morphology. The ‘atrifons group’ has the forehead all black or with tiny white spots, and orange on the breast (lacking a black upper margin) extending a short distance down flanks; rear flanks white. Breeding ‘mongolus group’ has extensive white on the forehead, which may be divided by a black central line; bright terracotta on breast extends well down flanks, terminating with scatteres grey-brown feathers, and often with a narrow black upper-breast margin. When non-breeding, flacks of ‘atrifons group’ are clear white, but many of ‘mongolus group’ have scattered grey/brown on flanks. In flight, ‘atrifrons group’ has paler tail-band and extensive white at sides of rump and tail, ‘mongolus group’ has broad dark tail-band with narrow white of rump and tail.
